Uglich is a small town on the Volga river 200 km to the North off Moscow. It was founded in 937 (however there are some new findings at the territory of the city dated back to the 7th century).
Uglich had been the seat of a small princedom from 1218 until 1328 when the local princes sold their rights to the great prince of Moscow. As the border town of Moscow it was burnt several times by Lithuanians, Tatars and the grand prince of Tver. During the reign of Ivan the Terrible the city was developing rapidly. The local inhabitants helped the tsar to capture Kazan city by building a wooden fortress which was transported by the Volga all the way to Kazan.
The most famous event in the town's history took place on May 15, 1591 when the youngest son of Ivan the Terrible Dmitry 10-year old boy was found dead with his throat cut in the palace courtyard. His death precipitated the dynastic and political crisis known as the Time of Troubles as he was the last scion of the ancient Rurik dynasty.

In the photo one can see the Transfiguration Cathedral - the main cathedral of the city.
