Russia, Moscow

The cathedral of Intercession of the Virgin on the Moat, better known as the cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed, or St. Basil's cathedral is a multi-tented church on Red Square in Moscow. The cathedral has become the symbol of Moscow and the whole Russia.

It was commissioned by Ivan IV (also known as Ivan the Terrible) to commemorate the capture of the Khanate of Kazan, and was built in 1555-1561. A legend has it that on completion of the church the Tsar ordered the architect, Postnik Yakovlev, to be blinded to prevent him from ever creating anything to rival its beauty again. In 1588 Tsar Fedor Ivanovich had a chapel added on the eastern side above the grave of Basil Fool for Christ (yurodivy Vassily Blazhenny), a Russian Orthodox saint after whom the cathedral was popularly named.

Canon 40D, 70-300, ISO 320, F/10, hand-made HDR from 1/8, 1/3 and 0.8 sec, RAWs.

Some comments about the shooting parameters. I made the ISO level rather high because of the extremely strong wind that affected the image on long exposures. The HDR was hand-made because the 0.8 sec image was quite well except for several places near the light sources and with people. So I used the 1/3 sec image to copy unblurred people and 1/8 sec image for light sources.
